IAbout THEMATA
Founded in 2016, THEMATA is a woman immigrant-founded and always-curated artisan market created to spotlight makers, dreamers, and creatives. What began as a once-a-year event quickly transformed into something much more powerful — a shop-small movement born out of necessity and fueled by community.
During the COVID-19 shutdown, THEMATA pivoted to help local artisans sell their goods safely outdoors when traditional retail spaces were no longer accessible. That shift sparked new energy — and what was once a single annual event became a year-round series of indoor and outdoor markets that continue to grow each season.
THEMATA was founded by Tanvi Asher, a designer, entrepreneur, and community builder who was awarded the prestigious ATHENA Award in 2022 for her leadership and impact. In 2020, THEMATA was also named a runner-up in the Reshaping Rochester Design Awards by the Community Design Center for reimagining how creative commerce could thrive in public spaces.
Today, THEMATA proudly supports artisans through curated events that celebrate craftsmanship, connection, and conscious consumerism — proving that what starts small can spark something truly transformative.
